Finishings Of Stone Surface
|
|
Polished: To smooth or brighten a surface increasing the reflective quality and luster by chemical or physical processes. Generally gloss levels should be + 90 as measured by a gloss meter. To achieve this, final polishing should have been done by latest Italian/ French machines using imported abrasives.
Buffing: Using a non-abrasive pad attached to a machine, which rotates the pad in a circular fashion over the stone, generally between 150-300 RPM. Polishing formulations containing micro-fine abrasive materials are used with buffing to produce a more reflective gloss on the surface of stone. Waxes are also used with buffing to enhance the gloss of polished stone.
Honed: To grind a surface with a high grit material to a uniform specification without producing a reflective surface.
Sawn: i.e. unpolished. It is not advisable to buy this way because : floor polishers do not give as good a polish as factory machine polishers. many defects are not visible easily before polishing.
Calibration: To grind a surface with a high grit material to a uniform surface to maintain the thickness variation.
Gangsaw: To grind two sides of the stone surfaces with a high grit material to a uniform specification without producing a reflective surface.
Shade variation: Slabs / tiles should be sorted to ensure uniformity of shade. Normally, any colour can be sorted into three shades. Sorting is simple -just lay all the material on the floor and look from different directions.
Colour patches: These are darker or lighter patches or bands of single colours due to mineral localisation.
Scratches: The marring of the surface caused by physical trauma such as small stones or sand embedded in shoes scraping across a marble floor.
Staining: The absorption of foreign pigments or oils into the porous stone causing discoloration.
Double color: Sometimes two different grain sizes occur in the same slab, giving the appearance of a double colour.
Free lengths: i.e. lengths varying randomly while width is constant are also very attractive. Choose the widths as per the expected floor area. Buy random lengths and cut at your site to fit.
Flatness Tolerances
A 4’ dimension in any direction on the surface shall determine variation from true plane, or flat surfaces. Such variations on polish, hone, and fine rubbed surfaces shall not exceed tolerances listed below or 1/3 of the specified joint width, whichever is greater. On surfaces having other finishes, the maximum variation from true plane shall not exceed the tolerance listed below or + 3 mm of the specified joint width, whichever is greater.
Polished, honed or fine rubbed finishes... + 0.5 mm
Sawn, Calibrated, 4-cut and 6-cut.... + 1 mm
Edges also can be chamfered / bevelled. Chamfering removes whiteness and chipped edges. This looks very good. Chamfering is a simple process in which a polishing brick is run at an angle of 45 ?.

Shanxi Black
|
|
Shanxi Black which comes from China is a fine-grained, intensive black gabbro.
Technical and physical characteristics: Bulk density: 3,040 kg/dm³, compression breaking load: 350 N/mm², water absorption: 0,327 vol-%.
Uses: Construction stone, ornamental stone.
There are several sorts and qualities, s.a. China Supreme Black XS + China Supreme Black NM.
This stone internationally may be nominated as a granite. For the US- and Chinese market this is correct according to ASTM C 119 resp. GB/T 17670. But in the area of application of the European Standard (EN) this stone must be nominated as gabbro because the EN 12440 demands a scientific terminology for the denomination of natural stones, determined with a petrografic examination according to EN 12407 and 4.2 of prEN 12670.

What is Limestone?
|
|
Limestone is a type of rock made up mostly of calcite, a mineral form of calcium carbonate. Most limestone is gray, but all colors of limestone from white to black have been found. Scientists test natural rock to see if it is limestone by pouring cold diluted hydrochloric or sulfuric acid on it. Limestone gives off bubbles of carbon dioxide.
Most fresh water and sea water contain dissolved calcium carbonate. All limestones are formed when the calcium carbonate crystallizes out of solution. It leaves the solution in many ways, and each way produces a different kind of limestone. All the different kinds can be divided into two groups.
The first group includes limestones that formed almost completely without the aid of organisms. This type of limestone is forced out of solution when the water evaporates. Such evaporation takes place in the hot lagoons of many coral reefs, and in most shallow tropical seas. The high temperature causes the water on the surface to evaporate. A white "lime" mud is deposited on the bottom of the sea. This white mud slowly hardens into a light-colored limestone with a fine grain and even layers. Chalk is a limestone that remained soft.
When spring water evaporates on land, calcium carbonate forms a crust over moss, dead leaves, and the ground. It builds up a mound or terrace called tufa. Evaporation of water in limestone caverns forms another variety of limestone, called travertine, into stalactites and stalagmites.
The second group of limestones forms by the work of organisms. Many aquatic organisms draw calcium carbonate out of the water and use it to make their shells and bones. The oysters, clams, snails, corals, and sea urchins do this. When the animals die, the shells and bones are broken up by waves into shell and coral sand and mud. Many of the beaches on Pacific islands are made of such coral mud and sand. Most of the limestone layers in all parts of the earth were once shell or coral sand and mud. A limestone called coquina, formed of shells and coral, occurs in Florida. It is used to make roads and in building.
Limestone makes an excellent building stone because it can be carved easily. Like sandstone, it can be cut any way without splitting. For this reason, both limestone and sandstone are often called freestone. Limestone is especially good for foundations and walls where a high polish is not needed. Quarries in Indiana produce about half the building limestone in the United States.
Some factories use limestone to clean waste gases and water before releasing them into the environment. Limestone is also used to make lime and to smelt iron ore.

What is Travertine?
|
|
Travertine marble, pronounced TRAV uhr teen, is a dense, closely compacted form of limestone found mostly in banded layers. Most travertine is white or cream colored. It consists mainly of calcium carbonate. It forms when calcium carbonate separates from water through evaporation. Travertine is often used as decorative building stone because it is easy to cut.
Travertine occurs in areas where limestone is common and where circulating ground water contains calcium carbonate. It often forms around the mouths of hot springs and in streams. Rock formations called stalactites and stalagmites, which are found in caves, consist primarily of travertine.
The word travertine comes from an old Roman name for Tivoli, a town in Italy where large deposits of travertine occur. In the United States, travertine forms around the Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park.

What is Marble?
|
|
Marble is a rock widely used in buildings, monuments, and sculptures. It consists chiefly of calcite or dolomite, or a combination of these carbonate minerals. Most marble of commercial value was formed in the Paleozoic Era or earlier in Precambrian Time. Marble is found in many countries, including Belgium, France, Greece, India, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom. South American nations also have large marble deposits. In the United States, Georgia produces the most marble.
Other chief marble-producing states include Alabama, Colorado, Montana, Tennessee, Texas, and Vermont.
Properties:
Marble is formed from limestone by heat and pressure in the earth¡¯s crust. These forces cause the limestone to change in texture and makeup. This process is called recrystallization. Fossilized materials in the limestone, along with its original carbonate minerals, recrystallize and form large, coarse grains of calcite. Impurities present in the limestone during recrystallization affect the mineral composition of the marble that forms. At relatively low temperatures, silica impurities in the carbonate minerals form masses of chert or crystals of quartz. At higher temperatures, the silica reacts with the carbonates to produce diopside and forsterite. At extremely high temperatures, rarer calcium minerals, such as larnite, monticellite, and rankinite, form in the marble. If water is present, serpentine, talc, and certain other hydrous minerals may be produced. The presence of iron, alumina, and silica may result in the formation of hematite and magnetite.
The minerals that result from impurities give marble a wide variety of colors. The purest calcite marble is white. Marble containing hematite has a reddish color. Marble that has limonite is yellow, and marble with serpentine is green.
Marble does not split easily into sheets of equal size and must be mined carefully. The rock may shatter if explosives are used. Blocks of marble are mined with channeling machines, which cut
grooves and holes in the rock. Miners outline a block of marble with rows of grooves and holes. They then drive wedges into the openings and separate the block from the surrounding rock. The
blocks are cut with saws to the desired shape and size.
Uses:
Marble has long been highly valued for its beauty, strength, and resistance to fire and erosion.
The ancient Greeks used marble in many buildings and statues. The Italian artist Michelangelo used marble from Carrara, Italy, in a number of sculptures. Marble from Tennessee was used in parts of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. The Lincoln Memorial, also in Washington, was built of marble from Alabama, Colorado, and Georgia.
Extremely pure calcite marble is used for most statues. This kind of marble is translucent¨Cthat is, light penetrates a short distance below the surface of the marble before it is reflected. Large
blocks of colored marble are used for columns, floors, and other parts of buildings. Smaller pieces of such marble are crushed or finely ground and used as abrasives in soaps and other products.
Crushed or ground marble is also used in paving roads and in manufacturing roofing materials and soil treatment products.

What is Granite?
|
|
Granite--The Earth’s Oldest Building Material
Granite is quite literally as old as the earth. It is formed from liquid magma, the molten rock still found at the core of the planet, cooled slowly to form a substance approaching the hardness and durability of diamond. Granite is an igneous rock, the name reflecting its fiery beginnings. The chemical composition of granite is similar to that of lava. However, granite owes its hardness and density to the fact that it has been solidified deep within the earth, under extreme pressure. Over the eons, seismic activity has changed the crust of the planet, forcing veins of granite to the surface. Glaciers scraped off layers of dirt, sand and rock to expose granite formations. Typically revealed by outcrops, the deposits have been discovered on all the continents.
Composition
"Granites are formed of an aggregate of crystals which are molded together without any interspace between them or which enclose one another. The magnificent crystallinity of granite is a striking characteristic." Geology of Granite, E. Raguin, London, 1965 p.3
It is accurate to speak of "granites," because many varieties of the stone exist. While they differ in color, texture and crystalline structure, the granites have three essential minerals in common:
* Feldspar (50% or greater)
* Quartz (25-40%)
* Mica (3-10%)
These minerals occur in different proportions, giving each granite its own color, texture and structural characteristics. In addition, hornblende, magnetite, hematite, pyrite, zircon, garnet, corundum and other minerals may be present in smaller amounts, adding to the unique coloration and texture of each granite deposit. In supplying granite for all large building or complex of buildings, it is essential that the stone be consistent in color and texture. To assure this, each granite color must be quarried from the same deposit. With natural material like granite, a certain amount of "movement" or grain in the stone must be expected. Many people find this flow and blending of colors to be the most compelling reason for using granite.
